Hatch Art is raising money to produce a batch of Hamtramck Disneyland (HDL) t-shirts and the pre-orders will help pay for their production.

HDL is a site-specific Folk Art installation created by artist Dmytro Szylak. In its heyday, the installation filled the air with whimsical kinetic structures that rattled and whirred as they spun in the wind. The garages were painted in bright stripes, and the space in between was filled with found photographs, posters, and classic Americana images mixed with those of the Europe of Szylak’s past.

Hatch Art maintains the installation after Szylak passed away, preserving the core components of the artwork while proceeding with gradual updates as materials succumb to the elements. The intention is to honor Szylak’s work by keeping the future of the installation as lively as he did in the past.

The once-rotten roofs of the garages that support the art have been repaired, and the two houses on the property have been renovated for affordable housing. There is a newly designed and erected structure that serves as the base of the installation, and original whirligigs are in the process of being restored.

As with anything else, more work needs to be done on the site. Profit from t-shirt sales will go toward installing security cameras and public safety lighting; restoring electrical power to lights and mechanical elements; and operating a docent program for public engagement, among other things.
