Meet Martin

Martin has been incarcerated for seven years. His daughter, Ay, is 15 years old, smart, athletic, and faithful in writing to him and staying connected through phone calls. “She’s very smart,” Martin says proudly. “We stay in communication a lot. She writes me, we talk, and they come every now and then.”

One of his favorite memories goes back to when she was just two years old: while he was redoing plumbing under the house, she used her fingernail polish to help him mark the pipes. Since then, though, he admits, “I’ve missed everything — school, dances, all of it.”

That’s why the Father-Daughter Dance feels so important. “I’m excited to finally get a chance to do something with her so she’ll have a memory,” he says. Though he’s never worn a suit before, he’s looking forward to the night mostly for her. “It’ll probably mean more to her than me, because she’s never seen me dressed up. The first thing I’ll tell her is, ‘You’re very beautiful, I love you, and thank you for coming.’”
