Hello farmworker justice supporters! My name is Eduardo Hernandez and I hope you will consider giving to my fundraising campaign for Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF). SAF is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to bring students and farmworkers together to learn about each other’s lives and organize and advocate to improve conditions for farmworkers while providing young people the skills to become leaders in social change.

I’m running my fundraising campaign in this moment because there is no better time to reflect and show our gratitude to those who harvest the crops that feed us than Thanksgiving. I would bet you $10 (that I would donate to SAF!) that your sweet potatoes on your table this Thanksgiving likely come from North Carolina. As we indulge this holiday, I am grateful for the farmworkers that work in some of the most dangerous conditions to feed us.

I’ll be running my campaign from today through Giving Tuesday. Any amount helps and is appreciated!

My connection to SAF started in 2014, when I spent my summer doing health outreach to migrant labor camps in rural NC. This organization will always hold a special place in my heart because it was where I first truly learned about the farmworker movement and how young people could get involved.

SAF's work includes:

Conducting outreach to workers in migrant labor camps, welcoming them to their new communities and educating them about their rights.
Collaborating with partners to link farmworkers to legal services, healthcare, and migrant education resources.
Advocating for workers’ rights and immigration reform through lobbying, policy work, and popular education.
Supporting worker organizing through petitions, actions, and marches.
SAF raises consciousness about our food system through workshops, documentaries, and National Farmworker Awareness Week.
Students and farmworkers sharing their stories and working toward social change through participatory documentary and theater.

While I don’t work explicitly in the farmworker justice movement, I’ve made a career out of figuring out how to make the lives of workers better— now as an occupational safety and health professional where my goal is to make sure workplaces are safe and healthy for workers. I know we all have that story to tell that inspired their career, and my experience with SAF was mine. I’ve also stayed involved with SAF as a board member, first joining in 2021 and I’ve served as the Board Chair for the past 2 years.
