Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 54 children in the United States today.

Did you know that an individual with Down syndrome can also have autism? Research suggests that the prevalence is 8 TIMES GREATER in the Down syndrome population and the male-to-female ratio is much higher than the ratio seen for autism in the general population. They often experience even greater challenges from autism because they already have the developmental difference of having Down syndrome. There is no question that this journey is very unique and complex, which is why our families need YOU!

Since April is Autism Awareness month, the Down Syndrome - Autism Connection is running it's 1st Light it Up for Autism campaign to not only raise more awareness about this co-occurring diagnosis of Down syndrome and autism spectrum disorder (DS-ASD), but to give our families the much needed specialized support and resources that only we can provide with your help!

Our goal is to raise $5,400 during the month of April. If you start a team, you will be entered into a drawing to win all 3 great prizes!

The Down Syndrome – Autism Connection’s Story

We are the only non-profit organization in the US that has been providing specialized outreach through support, education, and resources to increase awareness of the unique challenges caused by co-occurring Down syndrome and autism. We work collaboratively with parents, educators and health care providers to find real solutions to every day challenges and help our loved ones to be better understood.

By participating in this campaign YOU are supporting our efforts to provide support, education and resources to families on this complex journey. These include printed educational materials, welcome kits for new families, conference workshops, webinars and on-line family support.
