Zahra the Desert Cat's TNVR Initiative
Zahra's TNVR Initiative
When my husband and I met Zahra, a tiny orange kitten, during our trip to the Agafay Desert, we had no idea she would change our lives. She appeared outside our tent every day, thin, sick, and barely surviving, yet still full of love. We couldn’t forget her after we left, so I worked with a local vet and a rescue group called ADAN to bring her safely to the U.S.
Now Zahra is healthy, happy, and living her best life in Hoboken, New Jersey. But there are so many cats still at the camp who never got that same chance.
That’s why I’m teaming up with ADAN and other local rescue groups/organizations, the camp where we met Zahra, and local veterinarians to start The Zahra TNVR Initiative, a program to trap, neuter, vaccinate, and release the remaining cats in the area. The goal is to give them a healthier, safer life and reduce the suffering caused by overpopulation.
All funds raised will go directly toward spaying and neutering, vaccines, and basic medical care for the cats, with the help of local vets who share this mission.
Zahra’s rescue has already inspired hundreds online, and now her story can help make life better for the cats she left behind. Every donation, big or small, helps us make a real difference in their lives.
What Your Donation Supports
We’re beginning with Zahra’s desert family—a small group of about 20 cats and 20 dogs living near the Agafay Desert outside Marrakech. Every dollar goes directly toward veterinary care, transportation, and food for these animals, managed by trusted local rescuers and volunteers.
Estimated Costs (Per Cat/Dog):
- Neutering (male): $30–40
- Neutering (female): $40–70
- Vaccination: $50
- Transportation (to and from vet): $10–20 for every 10 cats
- Temporary care and feeding: up to $140 per week depending on available housing or discounts
Volunteer Support (Local and Moroccan Team):
- Transportation and lodging: $100 per week
Every contribution makes a real difference. It helps us begin with Zahra’s family and then expand to other areas where animals are still struggling to survive.
Why We Want This
TNVR, which stands for Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, and Return, is an act of compassion. It saves lives, reduces suffering, and helps both animals and communities live peacefully together.
Right now in Morocco, the methods used to control stray populations are often cruel and inhumane. Many dogs and cats are poisoned, shot, or taken away to die. These are not isolated cases—they happen every day in cities and rural areas alike. It’s painful to witness, and it’s entirely preventable. TNVR offers a humane and effective alternative that protects both the animals and the people who live alongside them.
When male cats are neutered, they stop fighting, wandering, and spraying from stress or fear. They become calmer and safer, which gives them a real chance to be loved or adopted, or simply to exist peacefully without being seen as a problem. Fewer fights and complaints mean fewer reasons for authorities to harm them.
For female cats, TNVR means they no longer endure endless cycles of pregnancy and loss. It prevents kittens from being born only to die from hunger, infection, or cold. Each cat we help prevents dozens more from the same suffering. Vaccinations protect them, and the people around them, from deadly diseases like rabies.
When a community starts to manage its stray population through humane care, it becomes a kinder, cleaner, and safer place for everyone. TNVR gives cats dignity and gives people hope.
This approach works. A 28-year study in Florida showed an 85% drop in the stray cat population through TNVR, with almost no new kittens born. Similar projects around the world have seen populations decline by 50% to over 90% when programs are continued over time.
If you believe in kindness and compassion, this is how we start to change things.
