CMHS Library Catalog Kiosk Funding Proposal

Our Cohasset Middle High School Library Learning Commons, serving approximately 700 students every year, has grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years. We are in the midst of completely refurbishing our library collection with up-to-date relevant books funded by the Cohasset PSO. And, as a result, our checkouts are (happily) through the roof!

Oftentimes, we’ll have students come down to the library looking for a book and in need of browsing the online catalog. If there is a Librarian at the front desk (and this is a big IF due to schedules and teaching duties), the Librarian can search the catalog for the student. But wouldn’t it be ideal if the catalog was readily available for students to use independently right when they walked into the library? And, even if a librarian is available, wouldn’t it be better to “teach the children how to fish” vs. just providing them with the fish 🙂

Having a catalog kiosk available at the front of the library would teach students how to navigate library catalog software and empower students to look up books and library resources on their own (an important skill to have if they walk into any public library or go to any college library). As such, we are proposing the installation of a modern kiosk stand that houses a dedicated iPad for library catalog use by students and faculty. I have requested quotes for both a kiosk stand and an integrated iPad and the combined total is $2358 with a breakdown as follows:

• Kiosk stand from The Kiosk Group - $1574
• iPad Air M3 - $749
• Device management platform license - $35 per year

Total = $2358
