A CO-OPERATIVE HISTORY OF YPSILANTI

Ypsilanti’s cooperatives are coming together to build a collective understanding of our long local lineages of cooperation and strengthen connections across our cooperatives to expand our visions and horizons of what is possible in Ypsilanti. Join us in this family friendly evening to share space, music, food, conversations, knowledge about historical and currently operating cooperatives in Ypsilanti, and celebrate the UN International Year of Cooperatives. This event will take place Sunday November 23, 5-8pm at the Growing Hope Marketplace Hall in Ypsilanti.

Who are we?

We are a collective of community organizers structured as a worker self-directed 501(c)3 nonprofit.

What are we doing?

Creating survival programs for our most marginalized community members while building alternative systems to move our community towards economic cooperation, self-determination and abundance.

How are we doing it?

Our methodology is one of mutual aid and solidarity – meaning we are working and struggling with our neighbors and community instead of taking the conventional “top down” charity approach that replicates the systems of inequality and contributes to the very poverty and scarcity that we are fighting against. We aim to accomplish this by inviting the community into this work, sharing our access and privilege and building solutions together.
