Fund 60 Laptops for Afghan Girls Starting University and Internships
Since September 2021, girls and women in Afghanistan have been banned from high school, university, and most forms of work.
Despite this, thousands are still trying to continue their education online. Victory Afghanistan supports more than 1,200 students through structured English education and mentoring, delivered entirely free of charge. We are supported by 150 volunteers across 24 countries and are now in our sixth semester.
This appeal is raising funds for 60 laptops for Afghan girls who have already earned places in online Master’s programmes and international remote internships.
At present, 9 out of 10 of our students are studying entirely on smartphones. A small number rely on shared family laptops for limited access, while others use outdated or unreliable devices, including old iPads that are not suitable for university level study or professional internships.
For a typical Afghan family, buying a laptop is comparable to buying a car in the UK or the US. Families are struggling to afford food, electricity, and basic internet data, making a device of this cost completely out of reach.
Victory Afghanistan is a US registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organisation providing free online education and mentoring to more than 1,200 Afghan girls and women, aged between 11 and 40. The organisation was established in response to the ban on girls attending high school, university, and work under the current authorities.
We are entirely volunteer led, supported by around 150 volunteers from across the world.
We currently have 117 students in our Mentorship Programme, supported by 30 international mentors, preparing students for three clear pathways:
Online Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees
Scholarships abroad
International remote internships and paid work
ONLINE MASTER’S PROGRAMMES – 20 LAPTOPS
We have been in discussions with universities in England and Australia and have been provisionally offered 20 places on online Master’s programmes starting this September, including Computer Science, MBA, and International PGCE.
ONLINE INTERNSHIPS – 40 LAPTOPS
We have also confirmed 40 remote internships with international companies, beginning in May.
These placements run for three months and include roles in Human Resources, Business, and Marketing. Students will be working in real professional environments, gaining practical experience and building their future careers.
THE COST
Each laptop costs $760 (approx. £600).
The actual market value of the laptop itself is significantly lower. However, purchasing technology inside Afghanistan comes with unavoidable additional costs.
Approximately $160 per device is absorbed through import duties and border charges imposed on electronic goods entering the country. Further costs arise from limited supply, restricted access to international markets, and local distribution constraints.
In practical terms, we are paying a premium simply to get a standard, reliable device into the hands of a student.
THE SOLUTION
This is not a low cost or second hand approach.
These devices are required for postgraduate study and professional work.
Our students are attending live university seminars, completing advanced coursework, and working with international companies. This demands reliable, high performance devices capable of consistent daily use over several years.
We are therefore providing laptops that can support each student from degree study through to internships and early professional work.
A single device enables a student to:
Attend a full Master’s degree from Afghanistan.
Complete assignments and exams to international standards
Participate in professional internships with global teams
Build a CV with real work experience
Transition into paid remote employment
This is the bridge between education and income.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
You do not need to fund a full laptop
$10 contributions
$20 contributions
$50 contributions
Every donation moves one student closer
TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY
We have already successfully purchased two laptops, and in both cases it was the first time the students had ever owned a computer.
Funds are allocated to a specific student. The laptop is purchased locally from a trusted supplier, and the student provides photographs of both the device and the official receipt. All documentation is recorded and tracked by our team.
Where possible, we request a follow up photograph after a period of time to confirm that the laptop remains in use and is supporting the student’s education.
This ensures both the safety of our students and full accountability to our donors.
