In 1995, when I was pregnant with my first child, an ultrasound determined that the baby's kidneys were not developing normally. When fears of uncertainty arose, I meditated on several bible verses that I carried around in my pocket.
Fast forward to an emergency C-Section due to the unexpected loss of all my amniotic fluid and Chase was born!
After birth, Chase remained at Children's of Alabama for 10 days. Following surgery to correct the blockage, he went home and the medical journey continued. We visited Children's regularly for blood draws and growth monitoring. Around age 1, his father and I had to administer growth hormone shots regularly.
Chase has ALWAYS had a positive attitude and never complained about his condition. At the age of 14, Chase's kidneys were no longer able to keep up with his growing body, and it was time to determine if I was a match.
I had always prayed that I could be the person to donate a kidney to him and against the odds, I was beyond excited to be a match.
On April 21, 2011, I was able to give Chase one of my kidneys. As soon as I was released from UAB, I was taken to his bedside at Children's where we could celebrate.
I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to be a living donor. The Hoover community of friends was a lifeline of support for our family and the warm staff at Children's were considered friends. I cannot say enough about what a life-changing experience this has been.
Now it is our time to spread the word about the benefits of being an organ donor and watching a transplant recipient gain the strength to enjoy life to the fullest.
