Food insecurity is a household's economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food. It can be temporary or long term, and can be caused by a number of factors, including: Limited income, Unemployment, Race or ethnicity, Disability, Systemic discrimination, Poverty, Job loss, Medical emergency, Natural disaster, and Family crisis.
Food insecurity can lead to hunger, which is an individual-level physiological condition that can result in discomfort, illness, weakness, or pain. In 2023, 13.5% of U.S. households were food insecure, which was significantly higher than the 12.8% in 2022.
