A local teacher reached out to us and asked if we could help her stock her classroom library in her new classroom and we jumped at the chance! We had already installed a library for this teacher, but she's moving grades/classrooms and we wanted her to be able to leave the books we'd originally donated in the classroom she's leaving.

That's where YOU come in! Send us $15-$20 for us to purchase a new or like new book from the teacher's curated list and we'll make sure it ends up on her bookshelf!

In August 2018, Chattanooga Moms for Social Justice announced an initiative: The Classroom Library Project. With the goal of encouraging and promoting literacy throughout Hamilton County schools and homes, MSJ planned to fund, install, and stock diverse libraries in at least one classroom per each of the 12 Opportunity Zone Schools in Hamilton County.

The objective of The Classroom Library Project was for the libraries to include relevant and recently published works of children’s literature and be representative of the populations of children who utilize them—teaching them more about the world and people around them and encouraging a love of reading.

MSJ has successfully installed 17 libraries, exceeding the initial goal of 12 libraries.

Our story:

Moms for Social Justice was founded by four women in Chattanooga, Tennessee following the fatal Charlottesville rally in August 2017. Tired of angrily sharing facebook posts and yelling into a vacuum, they sought out a group where they could become active in their community, and were disappointed in the lack of options for families and moms in particular. MSJ began with six women sitting on a bridge with protest signs, and has grown into a flourishing activist organization advocating for equity for families in the Chattanooga area. So far all MSJ events have been privately funded by the founders, grants, and crowdsourced from our ever growing community We strive to keep events free and family friendly, and anticipate reaching an even broader audience as we are advocating for equity and intellectual freedom in a tumultuous election season and continue to engage in our community.
