Hi everybody!

Team Boston Kwong Kow will be racing for its 8th year at the Boston Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival! The team began in 2014 under the leaderships of Manyee Tang and Benjamin Yu, who is now the Assistant Principal of KKCS. This year, Boston Kwong Kow will have both adults and youth (ages 14–17) from our school community. We will be training together and racing against other teams in the Community Division!

Part of our organization's mission is ensuring access to traditional Chinese cultural activities for our community. We want everybody on our team to be able to participate in this exciting cultural sport — especially our teens paddlers!

WHAT IS DRAGON BOAT RACING?

Dragon boating is a fun-filled, adrenaline pumping, water sports activity. Teams compete in Dragon Boats, which are large canoe-like vessels fitted with ornately carved dragon's heads and tails.

Crews of up to 16 people sit in pairs and paddle to compete in races over distances of around 250m. Each boat has a drummer beating time to keep the paddlers in unison, and a professional helmsperson in the stern to guide the boat.

Originating in ancient China, Dragon Boat Racing is now the fastest growing water sport in the world and a favourite among charities and corporations for its fundraising and team-building benefits.

Founded in 1916, our school is one of the oldest Chinese cultural and educational organizations in New England. Our organization was founded on the mission of establishing an educational institution to help maintain Chinese heritage among those who have immigrated to the United States. For over a century, Kwong Kow has helped immigrant families assimilate into broader society while preserving their sense of culture and identity by providing quality, affordable academic and cultural programming.

We seek to continue serving families in Boston Chinatown and the Greater Boston area by ensuring our programs remain accessible to all. This gives our youth opportunities to engage in academically rigorous, physically engaging, and culturally enriching programs.
