Pastor Aggie Dennett Harmon is Uganda’s first openly trans woman pastor, a womanist theologian, and the author of Echoes of Grace: The Sacred Lives of Rural Trans and Queer Women. She leads Talented Youth Community Fellowship Uganda (TAYCOF), a trans women–led faith-based organization dedicated to community empowerment, storytelling, and justice. Her work bridges faith, visibility, and liberation for rural LGBTQ+ communities.

Biography

Pastor Aggie Dennett Harmon is Uganda’s first openly transgender woman pastor, a womanist theologian, and a leading voice at the intersection of faith, justice, and queer liberation across East Africa. Born in Kagera village in rural Jinja, a place she says feels like it doesn’t even exist on the map. Aggie’s journey has been shaped by exile, rejection, and extraordinary resilience.

From an early age, she faced violence and displacement, and for years lived as a gay man out of fear of being fully herself, even within queer spaces. Everything changed when she met Mama Annett, her “trans mother,” who helped her realize that she could only find joy and wholeness by embracing her truth. Three years ago, Aggie fully stepped into her identity, deciding she would never again hide.

Aggie is the co-founder and pastor of Talented Youth Community Fellowship Uganda (TAYCOF), a faith rooted, trans women led organization dedicated to empowering rural trans and queer communities through storytelling, education, spiritual care, and advocacy. She is also a spiritual leader in the Young Prophets Collective, a global online church led by queer and neurodiverse faith leaders, where she preaches, co leads communion, and mentors emerging LGBTQIA+ ministers.

Her ministry reclaims the sacred by challenging religious misinterpretations that condemn LGBTQ+ people particularly the weaponization of scriptures like the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. She teaches that God makes no mistakes, and that queer and trans people are beloved, holy, and worthy of spiritual leadership. Her purpose behind the pulpit and the microphone is clear: to uplift silenced stories, reclaim faith, and radiate grace in the face of adversity.

Aggie’s forthcoming book, Echoes of Grace: The Sacred Lives of Rural Trans and Queer Women, is a groundbreaking anthology rooted in her own survival and in the lives of others like her. Emerging from her storytelling and advocacy project Rural Radiance, the book weaves together raw narratives of pain, power, and healing from women who have faced harassment, sexual violence, forced migration, and erasure. Through womanist theology and narrative justice, Aggie centers the sacred lives of those most forgotten in both church and society rural, Black, trans and queer women reclaiming their place in sacred history.

She is also a committed HIV advocate, she has spoken out about the rising rates of infection among LGBTQ+ Ugandans, exacerbated by healthcare access barriers, funding cuts, and increased criminalization under the Anti Homosexuality Act of 2023. She names the danger this law has unleashed, cutting people off from life saving care, forcing them into hiding, and treating LGBTQ+ people like objects rather than human beings. Still, Aggie continues to fight for her sisters in rural villages, bringing messages of support, faith, and community directly to their doorsteps.

Aggie studied womanist theology at Wawa Aba Institute, where she deepened her leadership as a Black trans feminist rooted in faith, womanist thought, and community healing.

She uses her platform @AggieDennettHarmon (Facebook, X/Twitter, Instagram) to share updates on her book, her team’s advocacy, and her community’s bold resistance across Uganda and Kenya. She is currently raising $7,500 USD to support the design, editing, printing, and contributor compensation for Echoes of Grace in partnership with Rainbow Advocacy and the Our Pride network (ourpride.org).

Despite being told she would never succeed, Aggie has become a living testimony of faith, survival, and possibility. Her scars are her story, her resistance, and her reminder that every queer and trans youth deserves to be seen, heard, and loved. Through her ministry, writing, and activism, Pastor Aggie is building a bold, sacred future for queer and trans people in Africa, one rooted in grace, healing, and truth.
