Honoring 75 Years of the Grover Center Building: A Legacy of Community, History, and Vision

On July 16th, 1950, the cornerstone was laid for what would become one of Shelby County’s most enduring landmarks: the Grover Center building. Now, 75 years since its construction, the building stands not just as brick and mortar, but as a symbol of the community’s commitment to history, education, and shared purpose.

The story doesn’t end with the cornerstone. In 1978, Lena Firn Grover left a lasting legacy by willing her family farm to the Shelby County Historical Society (SCHS). A year later, in 1979, the Society placed the farm up for sale to support a bigger vision: a permanent home for Shelby County’s history.

That vision found its future in the heart of Shelbyville. With funds from the farm’s sale, SCHS made a bold move and placed a bid on the former Elks Club building — a space brimming with potential. In 1981, the Grover Museum officially opened its doors, housed within the Grover Center building.

Since then, the building has been more than just a museum — it’s been a gathering space, a keeper of local stories, and a place where generations have come to connect with the past. From the laying of the cornerstone to the launch of the museum, the Grover Center building holds an abundance of history, and we're proud to honor 75 years of its legacy.
