The New Local

The New Local is working to purchase a forever home in downtown Boulder. This will ensure that we can continue to represent local artists, in the heart of our city, while infusing the community with inclusive, creative culture. Purchasing property empowers our nonprofit to control our overhead costs, like rising rents, while claiming exemption from property taxes. We also become eligible for capital grants and historic preservation grants.

ARTS DOWNTOWN is important because:

A) We provide local artists with opportunities to grow an audience and earn a living.

B) We infuse the historic heart of our city with creative programming for everyone.

C) We make the city look good, magnetizing visitors and locals who patronize restaurants, shops and hotels, thereby contributing to the economic vitality (and tax basis) of Boulder.

D) We foster economic prosperity and social integration for women and underserved populations, within our community.

E) We embody environmental sustainability, re-imagining historic buildings for community use.

We are currently part of a competitive grant cohort, with the city Boulder, to receive CCRS funding. This grant would contribute to our purchase of a building on Pearl St. We also need to raise significant capital from local philanthropists and capital grants in order to make this happen. There are currently two historic buildings for sale on West Pearl St, costing between 2.5 and 2.9 million dollars, respectively.

Including closing costs and building improvements, we need to raise 3,000,000 in order to secure the purchase of a building downtown. We are working to secure funds by December 2025.

While this may seem like a lot of money (!) the cost of real estate downtown continues to rise. Artists have been priced out of downtown -we are the last remaining venue downtown that champions multiple local artists, exclusively- and this is our opportunity to stake a claim. West Pearl is more affordable than 'the bricks' and has the advantages of walking traffic, public transportation, parking and a leafy, historic vibe. These elements constitute a perfect environment for us to cultivate a downtown creative community.

Funds raised during this capital campaign will be kept in a separate bank account and may be used exclusively for the nonprofit’s purchase of a building in downtown Boulder. Any interest earned may be used for operating costs, which is hugely helpful! We are working alongside an experienced nonprofit financial advisor to oversee this process.
