Thank you for partnering with Historic Lewes to help in restoring the Cannonball House Maritime Museum, one of the town’s most iconic landmarks. Best known for the replica cannonball embedded in its foundation—a reminder of the 1813 British bombardment—the house at 118 Front Street has long welcomed visitors eager to explore this symbol of the town’s resilience and seafaring spirit.

The original restoration of the Cannonball House over 60 years ago was a key reason for the founding of the Lewes Historical Society, which went on to save many other historic structures in the town. Now, with this defining landmark again in need of critical repairs, Historic Lewes seeks your help to secure its future.

This multi-phase restoration effort began with Phase 1, a Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) to carefully document the structure and identify preservation priorities. Phase 2, now complete, focused on stabilizing and restoring the building’s exterior—including critical repairs to protect the structure and ensure it remains a safe and welcoming landmark on Lewes’ waterfront.

We are now entering Phase 3, which will focus on restoring and enhancing the interior of the Cannonball House and updating exhibits to better tell Lewes’ rich maritime story. These improvements will allow us to present the history of the War of 1812, shipbuilding, and Delaware Bay pilotage in more engaging and educational ways for visitors of all ages.
