Analog Video Processing with Basic Circuitry

Saturday November 21 & Sunday November 22 10:30 AM - 1:00 PM Both days!

At Whammy! Analog Media 1200 N. Alvarado Street
In this two-day hands-on workshop workshop we will explore ways of transforming composite video signals with basic electronic circuitry. Participants will build their own processing devices out of passive components (resistors, capacitors, inductors, etc.) as well as experiment with powered circuitry involving diodes and transistors. Effects produced will span the three main domains of composite video – luminance, sync, and chrominance – with an eye to understanding the electronic theory behind the glitches. All parts provided, instruction aimed towards absolute beginners.

Sean Russell Hallowell (@isorhythmics) is a composer and video artist based in Occidental, CA whose art synthesizes experimental techniques developed from hand-built circuitry with a cosmic perspective on music as a conduit for physical and metaphysical energy. Inspired by the affordances of outmoded media technologies, he explores the phenomenology of time in relation to the "arts of number" enumerated by the Medieval quadrivium - music, arithmetic, geometry, and astronomy.
