Many communities along the western coast of Alaska have faced hurricane force winds and devastating storm surge which has left some communities flooded and others completely devastated. Many of these families have dogs who have lost their houses and have no shelter at all... just as we approach the brutal upcoming winter months.

We were going to wait to get a better idea of the number of dog houses needed in these communities before we started fundraising, but based on what we are hearing from our contacts along the coast, we decided to start now. We are certain there will be more than 50 dogs who have been left homeless with absolutely no shelter at all. The amount of funding we are starting with is only enough for 20 insulated dog houses and straw, we know we will need more than 20 but we wills start here. This is the cost of the double walled/insulated house, and a bale of straw. This does not include any freight or shipping costs.

We are blessed to say that ALL of the air carriers in Alaska help us in some way. Some donate so many per month, some discount any and all, but even with a discount the cost to ship a 200 lb house/straw bundle from Anchorage to Bethel, Kotzebue, or Nome is about $215.00 per house so the cost to help just one dog can be substantial.

So we will start with 20 houses, try to get as much shipping donated as possible, and go from there.

While we at Straw For Dogs are not of the mindset that dogs should live outside in the cold away from their families, the reality is that many do.

We provide insulated dog houses and straw to dogs living outside in the harsh Alaskan climate. Even with a dog house and straw these living conditions are far from ideal. However, sending these resources are the most immediate action we can take to provide a little comfort to dogs who are suffering in the elements.

We continue to encourage people to bring their dogs inside (at least periodically for love and socialization), walk them, and play with them. We offer supplies to help with this as well.
