Last year, the Adapt and Overcome Foundation was launched to support young people that have lost a parent to suicide. Now, I am excited to announce the next step in our evolution: The Marathon Project, a pilot program in partnership with the Wendt Center for Loss and Healing focused on supporting research for therapeutic interventions for young people that have lost a parent or loved one to suicide.

Why focus on research? Federal, state, and local government grants are often focused on providing grants for counseling and therapy services, which is how non-profit organizations such as the Wendt Center are able to treat anyone that asks for help (they do not turn people away). However, there are less grants supporting research into therapy and counseling, especially for young people that have lost a parent to suicide. In focusing on research, we can evolve our understanding of therapeutic interventions for young people and improve our treatment--and ultimately outcomes--in the long-run.

How it works: For starters, every dollar raised will be matched by the Wendt Center. Initially, the pilot will focus on teenagers, typically the most at-risk and vulnerable due to the loss of a parent to suicide, with a dedicated team therapists at the Wendt Center leading the effort. Over time, the effort will expand to include younger cohorts.
