ABOUT SAIL BEYOND CANCER NORTH SHORE

We provide private free 3-hour sailing excursions for anyone who is being challenged by cancer - any age and any type of cancer. Our vision is put into action through providing meaningful experiences of relief from the challenges of living with cancer for people in our community.

ROWAN'S STORY

Rowan’s spirit is energy shot out of a cannon. His spirit is indomitable. With raucous glee and zeal he ran to embrace the Sail Beyond Cancer North Shore volunteer captains and crew, excited for his mission sail adventure aboard Sorcier. Once on board, he seized the moment and even took the helm during the sail. His passion for experiencing the sailing life and sharing his 10-year old enthusiasm for the world rekindles one’s belief in the power of heartfelt giving.

When Rowan was 9 years old his family received devastating news - Rowan had brain cancer. On New Year’s Day 2021, Rowan had the first of two brain surgeries, the second in April a few days before his 10^th birthday. This year has brought Rowan many days and weeks of treatment and recuperation. There were some really rough days and days that were better than others.

Rowan’s attitude at this young age is to ‘bring it on’! While in treatment, Rowan and his father and sister spent family time watching a sailing video, and that immediately resonated with him. He really wanted to go SAILING! Being out on the water and in command of our 35’ sailboat was pure joy for Rowan, his sister and his parents.

The sailing excursion filled his soul with energy and carried him on through his challenge with cancer. And now, he has been cancer free for 3 months!

This amazing gift of a day out on the water with the sun and wind on our faces allowed our family to bond and brought us back together after months of spending so much time apart dealing with the many aspects of treatment because of cancer.”
