The MAM Back to School program helps parents shop for new uniforms for their children, because all children deserve to have a great back-to-school experience!

MAM was formed during an economic downturn in 1983, MAM has served vulnerable families in Northwest Houston for nearly 40 years. MAM’s early work focused on providing families with the means to meet their basic needs, such as rent and utility assistance, clothing and transportation vouchers, and referrals to food pantries. It soon became apparent arming people with skills to speak English, get a new or better job, and understand how to manage money would create long-term stability for families and our community as a whole. MAM’s English as a Second Language (ESL) classes began in 1984 and were offered in locations throughout the Spring Branch and Memorial areas. It was critical for job seekers in a recovering economy to speak English. 

Throughout the years, our education programs expanded to include robust employment and financial education services, as well as citizenship classes. Soon, clients learned how to use a computer, create a new resume, and interview for a new or better job; build and follow a monthly budget; and pay off debt. Mental health counseling was added to teach individuals and families coping skills to manage their stress and anxiety. Eventually, Immigration Legal Services were added to ensure people had access to trusted advice and support, as well as help prepare the paperwork necessary to navigate a complex legal system to become citizens and obtain work authorization.
