Story
Miles for Smiles
Saturday July 8, 2023 through Sunday July 23, 2023
Join us for Miles for Smiles, a community-led virtual biking event that raises awareness and funding to support Trips for Kids Bay Area (TFKBA). The money we raise will help fund our educational biking programs for Bay Area youth from under-resourced communities that build healthy lifestyles, self-discovery, and connection with nature. This year we hope to raise $35,000 during Miles for Smiles to expand our programs by adding a part time staff person to help serve more youth in our Earn-A-Bike program and hire more interns as part of our workforce development teen internship program at the Re-Cyclery Bike Shop. As well as keeping our fleet of bikes tuned up and adding new bikes in all sizes for our Trail Rides and Mobile Bike Programs.
How to Donate:
Provide transformative cycling experiences for underserved youth.
Trips for Kids Bay Area was started in 1988 by Marilyn Price with our Trail Rides flagship program! Today, we partner with 31 nonprofit & community-based agencies and 28 schools in the Bay Area. Most of our nonprofit and school partners serve youth from historically underserved communities and rely heavily on Trips for Kids Bay Area for high-quality, engaging, and fun outdoor experiences:
Trail Rides takes groups of kids on mountain bike adventures (many for the first time) in gorgeous local, county and state parks. Participants learn bike skills, gain self-confidence, engage in physical exercise, and explore and connect with nature in beautiful open spaces throughout the Bay Area all while being mentored and coached by caring adults.
Our Earn-A-Bike Program is 4-week course with space for 6 youth each month, that provides the opportunity for youth who have been on rides through our Trail Rides Program to learn bike mechanics, bike safety and earn their own bike.
The Re-Cyclery Internship Program is a paid workforce development program designed for youth ages 15-18 to gain workforce development and social-emotional learning skills, on-the-job work experience, bike maintenance skills, and mentorship from caring adults who reflect their BIPOC identities.
Mobile Bike Workshops bring the joy of biking to kids at their school or after-school program site. Over the course of 10 weeks, the Mobile Bike Workshop is designed to teach safe riding and bike maintenance skills to youth without requiring them to travel outside of their school or community.
Bike Shop Internship provides teens from under-resourced communities in the Bay Area paid work experience, classroom training, and coaching at the Re-Cyclery Bike Shop, our social enterprise located in San Rafael. This hands on, work experience teaches youth both hard and soft skills and prepares them for the work world.
