Story

Specific Need

The Cats at Longstreet (TCAL) is a Northern Virginia-based cat rescue that helps cats and kittens from all walks of life but specializes in helping those cats for whom tragedy has struck in the harshest of ways. We take in those who are so sick or who have been severely injured and are not expected to survive - because The Cats at Longstreet is often their last hope, their last chance, the last effort to save their lives.

Our specific need is to raise funds to spay, neuter, vaccinate, microchip, and provide needed medical care for around 500 cats and kittens every year so they can be adopted to a loving home. Because we take in the very sick and severely injured and nurse them back to health, our operating expenses can be quite large. Our team answers the call when local shelters and kennels are past capacity and are in danger of euthanizing otherwise healthy cats. With the help of our network of fosters and volunteers, The Cats at Longstreet has socialized and prepared all of those saved cats and kittens and readied them for adoption.

We do what we do because their lives matter.

Mission

The Cats at Longstreet is dedicated to placing the right cat in the right home at the right time. We make sure to get to know our cats, their behaviors, their quirks, and their likes prior to sending them to new homes. It is important to us that we find the absolute best match for the cat and for the family or individual looking to adopt. We are patient and understanding, knowing that a good portion of our cats have special needs, and the right home is out there for each and every one.

Profile

The Cats at Longstreet is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that provides care and love to cats from all walks of life but specializes in the cases where life hasn't been so kind. These cats need the love and care we provide and that starts and ends with you.

The rescue provides safe havens for pregnant cats to have their kittens, watching them grow from their first moments to their adoption day; and also, to orphaned kittens, including neonate care around the clock to give them the best chance of survival.

We aren't just here for kittens; we help plenty of older cats as well. When an owner passes away and their beloved feline friend is left homeless, TCAL offers a soft place to land.

We also assist with trap-neuter-return (TNR), because we understand that not every cat desires to be a lap cat and may well prefer to live in a barn. We believe those cats also deserve a chance to live fully and will do anything we can to help them. We currently support 3 feral colonies in Loudoun County.

Our organization wouldn't exist without the help of our volunteers, fosters, supporters, and donors. We appreciate all types of help from sharing a post about us on Facebook to donating toward supplies for our purrfect kitties.

The Cats at Longstreet has been a 501(c)3 non-profit organization for several years, however, the rescue roots reach back to 2010. Dr. Kathi Werden and Kristin Lassiter met while working at the same veterinary practice and soon realized they shared many interests and passions. When presented with a particularly frustrating case, the two decided to care for a cat that would have otherwise been euthanized. Through their care, training, and dedication, that cat lived a long, happy 8 years with a loving family. An orphaned litter of kittens and a leukemia (FeLV) positive mom followed, and the rescue was born. Thirteen years later, Longstreet has rescued, treated, and adopted out over 2,500 cats.
