2024 has been one heck of a year, hasn’t it? When Hurricane Helene hit Valle Crucis on Friday, September 27^th, we were putting the finishing touches on what should have been an amazing fundraising weekend, filled with activities, delicious food, and fellowship. As the storm raged, we cancelled the weekend and did what any good neighbor does: we kick-started our kitchen generator and opened our doors to hundreds of our neighbors who needed help. Hot showers, charging stations, hot meals, and donated essentials kept folks from going hungry. The hot showers had the biggest impact; helping people feel human in an inhuman situation was a gift to both them and to us.

When the waters receded and our community assessed the damage, it became clear that the current Valle Crucis School had been rendered condemned by the storm. So we did it again. We opened our doors and our hearts to the children of our community, and are now the proud hosts of grades 2-5 in two of our meeting spaces and in the Annex. The Mission School has come full circle. Another blessing.

Many of you have already given generously to support the VCCC through the worst of the damage from Helene – both to our physical plant and to our business from the many cancellations. The incredible generosity of hundreds of donors has kept our doors open and our staff employed. If you have already given, thank you! If you have a little more to meet our year-end fundraising goal, even better! And if you haven’t made your yearly donation to the Valle Crucis Conference Center, this would be an especially meaningful year to do so.

We all need places of respite like Valle Crucis more than ever in the coming years.
