“Resistance and Resonance: A Narrative View of Justice and Self-Care”

Mary Clark Moschella will be at Louisville Seminary to deliver the lecture in person with an option for remote participants to join virtually. Registration is required whether attending in-person or online.

Mary Clark Moschella presents a pastoral theological analysis of the sometimes-competing goods of prophetic social justice and self-care. She offers a narrative spiritual care methodology that untangles the web of culturally sanctioned stories that separate these two goods. This approach involves people in resisting harmful narratives and re-authoring their own stories in ways that find resonance in body, soul, and community.

About Mary Clark Moschella

Mary Clark Moschella is the Roger J. Squire Professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling at Yale Divinity School. Prior to joining the YDS faculty in 2010, she taught at Wesley Theological Seminary for ten years; before that she served as a pastor in UCC congregations in Massachusetts for thirteen years. Among her publications are: Caring for Joy: Narrative, Theology, and Practice (Brill, 2016); The Edward Wimberly Reader, co-edited with Lee H. Butler, Jr. (Baylor University Press, 2020); and the 2nd edition of Ethnography as a Pastoral Practice (Pilgrim and SCM, 2023). Her current scholarship articulates a narrative approach to pastoral and spiritual care practices. She also studies prison-based literature and teaches Inside/Out courses that bring divinity students and incarcerated students together in carceral settings. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, reading novels, and going to art museums.

The Greenhoe Lectures were established in 1966 by Memorial Presbyterian Church in Midland, Michigan, in honor of their former pastor, Dr. Theodore M. Greenhoe. Dr. Greenhoe was a member of the Louisville Seminary class of 1934. View prior lectures here.
