Thanks to your generosity, we were able to walk into the July auction ready—with enough raised to bring one horse home, and pledges that nearly got us to two.
We bid on several, including some of our top picks, but this month’s prices ran high—and we were outbid on most. That’s always a little tough, but it’s part of the auction reality.
There were also two situations where we chose not to bid:
-
Two bred donkeys sold individually. We did bid on the first, but she went for our full budget. The second sold within budget—but to the same bidder, who clearly wanted to keep them together. Since donkeys form strong, lifelong bonds, we chose not to compete. Keeping them together was more important than bringing one home.
-
A woman outbid us on two thin horses we were watching—plus a close friend of one. We had the chance to talk with her and learned she regularly attends the auction, does her own private rehab, and places horses in homes in her community. While we didn’t know her before, her approach mirrors what several local individuals we do know and trust are already doing. We’re hopeful she’s providing a good outcome and encouraged her to introduce herself in the future so we can coordinate—because we never want to get in the way of a good home.
đź’› Meanwhile, we did bring home one special gelding.
He was one of our priority horses—red, gentle, and missing his ears from past frostbite. His unusual coat pattern is called “crushed velvet” or “puzzlecoat”—and while it can be caused by a number of things (allergies, pain response, or even just genetics), we’ll be working closely with our vet to make sure he’s healthy and comfortable. He’s already capturing hearts.

As always, we are so grateful to be able to say yes—and act quickly—because of your support.
This month, we’re also welcoming home three adopted horses whose family is going through a divorce. They were loved, and their return was the right choice—and thanks to early donations from this community, we already have a good start on covering their care. We still have a bit more to raise, but knowing the support is already in motion makes all the difference.
Whether it’s a first rescue or a second chance—thank you for helping us be there.
With endless gratitude,
The Gentle Spirit Horses Rescue Team
