Slant’d is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit reimagining publishing to be more accessible, equitable, and joyful for AAPIs everywhere 💛. We are a creative home for AAPI voices, offering literary magazine and book publishing opportunities, as well as creative writing and storytelling programs.

The state of publishing

Publishing is an industry that has historically been inaccessible and unsupportive for the AAPI community. Because of this, so many diverse, authentic AAPI voices and stories are missing from the mainstream conversation.

This year, nonprofits have faced unprecedented challenges with funding. According to AAPIP, AAPI communities receive less than 0.5% of all philanthropy. On top of that, literature is the least-supported artistic discipline in the US, receiving less than 2% of the $5 billion in arts grants awarded. As a small nonprofit, the odds may be stacked against us, but we’re not going anywhere.

How we're reimagining publishing for the better

Our mission is to nurture self discovery and unlock creative expansion for AAPIs. Since 2017, Slant'd has empowered 200+ AAPI writers and artists to share their stories through thought-provoking publications and inclusive storytelling programs for AAPIs across the country.

We're committed to amplifying and celebrating the work of AAPIs whose stories have long been left out of society’s collective narrative. From our years of experience co-creating with AAPI creatives from all walks of life, we know how life-changing it is to be told that your story matters.

We have bold ambitions for 2025

Publishing our 7th literary magazine issue: We're back with another issue of our namesake publication! This next issue is themed LORE and explores the explores ancestry, history, and the woven threads of joy, struggle, and rebirth that shape who we are across generations. It's set to come out in February 2026, just in time for Lunar New Year.
Amplifying AAPI voices in more places through retailers and events: We are proud to be the publishers of many first-time AAPI creatives and our goal this year is to share their stories and art with as many people as possible by attending as many zine festivals and book fairs as possible. We're actively building relationships with local retailers and independent bookshops to bring Slant'd magazines to more readers. Your support will help cover tabling fees and transportation costs, allowing us to connect these voices with a broader audience.
Developing our first 2 books: We started as a magazine, but last year, we acquired our first two books (a children's picture book and a visual memoir), which are slated to be published in Fall 2026. This expansion into books is an example of our commitment to bringing more AAPI writers and artists to mainstream media so they can receive the recognition they deserve. Your support will help us pay for artist and author commissions, production, and printing costs.
Expanding Blank Page Revival, our signature creative writing program: Last year, we launched Blank Page Revival (BPR), our month-long creative writing program for AAPI ages 25+ to challenge perfectionism, channel communal creativity, and tackle a new piece of work from start to finish in 30 days. The program is centered around risk play, collaboration, and building a sustainable writing practice. This September, we're bringing it back and into a new city: Chicago! Your support will help us cover venue fees, food/drinks, supplies, and coach stipends.
Launching Beyond the Page, our newest storytelling program: To make storytelling more accessible to AAPIs outside of the coasts, we are launching Beyond the Page, a new virtual live storytelling development program that centers, affirms, and celebrates our lived experiences as AAPIs, in November. Drawing upon traditions of family lore or entertaining friends over a shared meal, participants generate and craft true stories from their lives for performance. Your support will help us cover instructor costs.

Thank you for your gift last year! Your generous contribution helped us make incredible strides as our first year as an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

With your support, we published the 6th issue of our literary magazine, which featured 12 heartfelt stories by 21 AAPI creatives (the highest number of submissions and publication donations we’ve ever had for an issue!), launched Blank Page Revival (a fee-free program designed to foster a safe space for AAPIs ages 25+ to create), and acquired our first 2 books!
