Kansas Students Are Making Their Campus Safer

In a few weeks, students at the University of Kansas are doing something simple that could save a life.

They’re talking with classmates about distracted driving, asking them to sign Hunter’s Pledge, and encouraging each other to make safer choices behind the wheel.

It’s students leading students — one conversation, one pledge, and one safer decision at a time.

Students Leading the Way

Across campus, students—including members of Phi Kappa Psi—are giving their time to make Safe Driving Week possible.

They are setting up tables, starting conversations, asking classmates to take the Safe Driving Pledge, and reminding friends how quickly one decision behind the wheel can change a life forever.

By participating, the Kansas brothers are helping protect today’s students and everyone who shares the road with them.

This is a student-led effort, and support from people like you makes it stronger.

Remembering Levi Ward

From the age of 10, Levi Ward was fascinated by weather. He created his own YouTube channel, Weather Pursuit, and at just 17 was contracted by Wichita ABC affiliate KAKE News as an on-air First Alert Storm Tracker.

Levi had a bright future ahead of him. Tragically, the world will never know how far his talents might have carried him.

After Levi’s death, his parents, Jill and Shawn Ward—Phi Psi Kansas Alpha ’87—spent countless hours learning what led to the crash and advocating for justice for their son.

They were deeply touched when Hunter’s Fund and Levi’s Phi Kappa Psi brothers decided to honor his memory through Safe Driving Week at the University of Kansas.

Jill later spoke to the chapter about the responsibility every driver carries:

“In an instant, you can take a life. Whether you are driving intoxicated, texting while driving, or simply not giving 100% of your attention to the road, you can take a life.”

Her message to the brothers was simple: Do the next right thing.

That means putting away the phone. Never driving impaired. Giving the road your full attention. And helping friends make those same responsible choices.

Hunter’s Story—and the Mission Behind Safe Driving Week

Hunter Watson was also a college student with a promising future ahead of him.

He was curious, creative, entrepreneurial, and always looking toward what might come next. But Hunter’s life was cut short when he was killed as a passenger in a distracted-driving crash.

His family and friends created Hunter’s Fund so his story could continue to make a difference.

Today, Hunter’s Fund supports and supports Safe Driving Weeks on college campuses across the country. Each year, more than 1,400 student volunteers talk with their classmates about distracted driving and invite them to sign Hunter’s Pledge.

At Kansas, Hunter’s mission and Levi’s memory come together in one shared purpose: helping young people understand the responsibility that comes with driving and encouraging them to make choices that may save a life.

A Simple Pledge Can Matter

Most crashes aren’t random. They often come down to small decisions made in seconds.

Every year, more than 40,000 people lose their lives in car accidents in the United States, and many of these tragedies are preventable.

Research cited by Hunter’s Fund shows that signing a pledge can change behavior by up to 47%.

That’s why students are asking their classmates to make one simple commitment:

Don’t drive distracted.

Be Part of Kansas Safe Driving Week

You can help in whatever way feels right to you.

Take Hunter’s Pledge

TAKE THE PLEDGE

Make your own commitment to drive distraction-free — and encourage someone you care about to do the same.

Help Students Reach More People

SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN

Your gift helps students bring the Safe Driving message to more classmates and helps Hunter’s Fund support Safe Driving Weeks on campuses across the country.

Every gift, large or small, helps students turn conversations into safer choices.

One Conversation Can Matter

Safe Driving Week isn’t just about what happens at a table on campus.

It’s about the decision a student makes later — when the phone buzzes, a message arrives, and they choose to wait.

Every student who makes that choice makes the road a little safer for everyone.

Thank you for helping Kansas students lead the way.
