About Us
Cancer Support Community San Francisco Bay Area (CSC SF Bay Area) provides free, comprehensive support services including counseling, support groups, nutrition and exercise programs, emergency financial assistance, and patient education, along with specialized programs for teens and children. Our evidence-based programs empower people with cancer and their loved ones to work in partnership with their treatment team to manage care and improve health outcomes and quality of life. Programs are offered in person and virtually, in both English and Spanish, serving the entire San Francisco Bay Area.

Our Vision
Everyone impacted by cancer receives the support they want and need throughout their experience.

Our Mission
Cancer Support Community uplifts and strengthens people impacted by cancer by providing support, fostering compassionate communities, and breaking down barriers to care.

Our History
CSC SF Bay Area was founded in 1990 as The Wellness Community San Francisco East Bay and has since provided free support to thousands of people with cancer and their loved ones. Our founder, Shannon McGowan, served as Program Director for the first Wellness Community, based in Santa Monica, which helped launch the integrative therapies and cancer patient empowerment movement in the United States.

CSC SF Bay Area is an affiliate of the international Cancer Support Community organization, the largest provider of support services for people with cancer and their loved ones in the United States, and adheres to the highest quality standards of practice. We operate as an independent nonprofit organization, which means we do not receive funding from the international Cancer Support Community organization, and all donations we raise directly support programs and services in our local community.
