Founded in 1991, the Mary Susan Moore Medical Society (MSMMS) has spent more than three decades championing health education, advocacy, mentorship, and the professional advancement of Black women physicians throughout the Greater Houston–Galveston region.

Our organization proudly bears the name of Dr. Mary Susan Moore, the first African American woman to practice medicine in Texas. Her pioneering legacy of courage, excellence, and perseverance continues to inspire our work as we create opportunities for future generations of Black women in medicine.

At the heart of our mission is a commitment to investing in the next generation of physicians through scholarships, mentorship, and professional support.

The need remains significant. Black women continue to be underrepresented in the physician workforce, while the rising cost of medical education creates substantial financial barriers. Nationally, medical school graduates with educational debt carried a median debt of approximately $215,000 in 2025. For aspiring physicians already navigating systemic barriers and limited access to financial resources, scholarship support can make a meaningful difference.

Since our founding, MSMMS has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to deserving medical students and residents. In 2025 alone, we distributed nearly $40,000 to nine medical students and three resident physicians, representing institutions including Baylor College of Medicine, McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, and other regional training programs.

Our investment extends far beyond graduation. Many former MSMMS scholarship recipients now practice medicine throughout the Houston–Galveston community, caring for patients, addressing health disparities, mentoring future physicians, and carrying forward our legacy of service.

Help Us Continue to BLOOM 🌸

In 2026, our goal is to award more than $30,000 in scholarships while continuing to expand the financial support and professional opportunities available to Black women pursuing medical careers. As financial pressures and barriers to educational funding persist, the generosity of our members, sponsors, and community partners is more important than ever. Your financial contribution, sponsorship, or in-kind support is an investment in the future of medicine. Every gift helps alleviate financial burdens, strengthen pathways to medical careers, and empower talented women who will shape the health and well-being of our communities for generations to come.

Together, we are doing more than awarding scholarships. We are building a legacy of opportunity, representation, mentorship, and medical excellence.
