Woven Together by Code

Dr. Philip Butler will be at Louisville Seminary to deliver the lecture in person with an option for remote participants to join virtually. Registration is required whether attending in-person or online.

We all live by (a) code. Whether we acknowledge it or not. Much like the software we encounter on a regular basis a person’s code is not readily visible. However, code is responsible for the ways that things behave. Especially those things which depend upon its logic(s) to function. However, when it comes to people our code is rarely visible, even to ourselves. “Woven Together By Code” will explore our unexplored and unspoken programming/ways of life as a means to arrive at a more cohesive and interwoven way of living and being.

About Dr. Philip Butler

Philip Butler, Associate Professor of Theology and Black Posthuman Artificial Intelligence Systems, Director, Iliff AI Institute (Iliff School of Theology) is an international scholar whose work primarily focuses on the intersections of neuroscience, technology, spirituality and Blackness. He uses the wisdom of these spaces to engage in critical and constructive analysis on Black posthumanism, artificial intelligence and pluriversal future realities. He is also the Director of Iliff’s AI Institute and founder of the Seekr Project, which explores the iterative connections between generative AI, mental health and critical Black consciousness.

About the Caldwell Lecture

The Caldwell Lectures honor former Louisville Seminary President Frank H. Caldwell who served from 1930 to 1964. Dr. Caldwell was Professor of Homiletics during his time at the seminary in addition to serving as President from 1936–1964. He also served as the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in the United States in 1966 after retiring from the seminary. In addition to the Caldwell Lectures a professorship in homiletics has been endowed in his name at the seminary. View prior lectures here.
