A Brief History of Arts In Reach

Arts in Reach (AIR) began in 1997 as a summer camp for at-risk girls, founded by two University of New Hampshire graduates. In its inaugural year, Liberty Mutual served as AIR’s sole corporate sponsor—a partnership that continues to this day. With their support and contributions from friends and family, AIR raised nearly $2,000, enabling the purchase of art supplies, weekly field trips, and rental space. That summer, nine girls aged 12–14 participated in six weeks of free programming, which included outdoor painting on the Isles of Shoals, a visit to Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, and workshops led by volunteer artists.

The camp was immediately successful, drawing interest from local schools and families seeking support for their daughters. In 1999, just two years after its founding, AIR was incorporated as a 501(c)(3), solidifying its mission to provide accessible, transformative arts programming. Over time, AIR evolved to reflect the changing needs of its community. While it initially served girls as the only marginalized gender group, the organization expanded to also support youth of all diverse identities. This inclusive shift has made AIR a safe, welcoming space for all participants who feel it is the right fit, furthering its commitment to accessibility and equity.

AIR quickly became more than just an arts program—it was a space where participants could build confidence, improve relationships with family and peers, and rediscover their passion for learning. In 2015, AIR conducted its first comprehensive alumnae survey, designed to evaluate its long-term impact on participants. The survey, which is intended to be repeated every five years, highlighted the transformative power of AIR’s programs, with alumnae reporting increased confidence, healthier relationships, and improved mental well-being.

Today, AIR serves more than 160 teens annually across the Greater Seacoast area, all at no cost to participants, while remaining deeply rooted in trauma-informed, inclusive programming.

As AIR continues to grow, it remains a vital resource for teen girls and gender-expansive youth, empowering them through creativity, connection, and community.
