STEM Paths Innovation Network (SPIN) started in 2015 as a single class at the Filipino Community Center in Southeast Seattle. Ten years later, our programs reach over 1,200 K–12 students a year across King County. We focus on building pathways into King County’s fast-growing STEM economy for girls, gender expansive youth and BIPOC students, while fostering a lifelong love of STEM education.

HEART is our program at West Seattle Elementary, built side-by-side with the school’s own teachers so every student gets free, hands-on STEM. During the school day, Lab Days bring coding on iPads and robots through obstacle courses into every classroom. After school, more than 30 students a week dig into project-based STEM. This year students will build a LEGO Antarctic research station, program their own arcade games, and learn 3D printing.

Eighty percent of HEART’s students qualify for free and reduced lunch, and the stretch between lunch and an after-school project can be a long one. Last year, this community helped HEART’s teacher expand her snack offerings, and not a single student went hungry during the program. HEART is growing again this year to welcome even more scholars, and feeding them well takes real support.

Monthly gifts keep snacks stocked all year long:

• $5/month — about a week of string cheese for a classroom

• $10/month — about a week of hummus cups or apple slices

• $25/month — a full week of fresh fruit, veggies, and cheese for the whole program

One-time gifts are just as welcome. Every dollar goes toward closing the hunger gap for Heart's scholars.
