Sankofa Video and Books has been a cultural anchor in Washington, D.C. since 1997, fostering literacy, creativity, and community through a rich offering of books, films, and events by and for people of African descent. Now, in partnership with Mypheduh Films Inc., Sankofa is launching a bold expansion to deepen its impact, strengthen its roots, and ensure its long-term sustainability in the heart of the nation’s capital.

With your support, the Expansion Fund will:

Grow our physical space to welcome more readers, thinkers, and creators.
Secure full ownership of our building, freeing us from debt and ensuring Sankofa's permanent place in the community.
Create dedicated activity and gathering spaces that meet overwhelming demand from our supporters.
Upgrade our facilities to better house Sankofa Film Instutute’s community film archive and host filmmaking workshops and educational programs.

Our Mission, Our Home

For over 25 years, Sankofa Video and Books and Mypheduh Films have preserved and advanced the legacy of Black storytelling. We’ve stood firm through waves of economic hardship, gentrification, and even a global pandemic—anchored in a historically Black corridor rich with culture and resistance. But to thrive in a rapidly changing D.C., Sankofa must grow. Without expansion, this vital cultural space risks being lost.

The Sankofa Film Institute

In partnership with Positive Productions, Inc., we proudly launched the Sankofa Film Institute—an initiative dedicated to investing in current and future independent filmmakers, featuring a community archive and filmmaking workshop series. The Expansion Fund will allow us to improve our facilities, where these are housed and operate, by creating upgraded education and production spaces. This facility will teach the next generation of filmmakers the art of directing, editing, acting, and production across modern audiovisual platforms.
