Celebrating 40 Years of Impact: Tiegerman, A Family of Services

For 40 years, Tiegerman has been a lifeline for individuals with special needs and their families, providing not just services, but hope and possibility. Founded in 1985 by Dr. Ellenmorris Tiegerman, the organization has helped countless children and adults with developmental disabilities and language-based learning challenges find their voices, build confidence, and create meaningful lives.

What started as a small preschool program for just 36 children—known then as the School for Language and Communication Development (SLCD)—has grown into a thriving family of schools and community programs. Today, Tiegerman serves over 700 individuals each year, ranging in age from pre-school to adult.

A Vision Fueled by Love

Dr. Tiegerman’s journey began with a deeply personal experience. When her sister lost her ability to speak after a childhood accident, Dr. Tiegerman witnessed how isolating communication barriers could be. Her father’s tireless efforts to help her sister communicate inspired her to dream of a place where language and learning could transform lives.

That dream has blossomed into a lifelong mission to ensure that everyone has a chance to be heard, to grow, and to thrive. Today, Tiegerman supports individuals at every stage of life, offering education, career training, and residential services—all with the same compassion and care that started it all.

Building a Community That Cares

At Tiegerman, education goes far beyond the classroom walls. It’s about creating a community where families find support, encouragement, and friendship. Parents become advocates and allies for one another, while teachers and therapists become trusted guides, helping families navigate the challenges of special needs education.

The organization also works closely with local businesses to create real-world opportunities for its students and adults. Partnerships with companies like Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger allow students to gain hands-on experience running Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger stores within the schools, giving them skills and confidence to succeed in the workplace.
