United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County

Social impact organizations like United Way have a role to play in confronting climate change, and we’re excited to be working with the Green Built Alliance and Blue Ridge Power to install solar panels on our headquarters on South French Broad in downtown Asheville.

In the last 12 months, United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County (UWABC) paid nearly $30,000 to Duke Energy—and these costs continue to rise every year. An investment in renewable energy will reduce our building’s energy needs by sixty percent, resulting in nearly $20,000 in annual savings which can be reinvested in our community partners who serve youth and families across Buncombe County.

At the same time, reducing our building’s operating costs will allow us to continue providing high-quality, low-cost, accessible office space to our 13 nonprofit organizations. The UWABC building’s purpose and central location create a powerful opportunity for the organization to serve as a model for businesses and other nonprofits, encouraging more widespread adoption of clean energy in our community.
