Hi!
I am Maya, the founder of Fresh Opportunities. I started Fresh Opportunities in 10th grade last year when I noticed my high school was throwing out its leftover lunch at the end of the day. While at the same, everyday on my commute home, I would see food insecure individuals on the street.
I searched the internet for a solution to my problem but couldn't find any organizations that worked with high school students to fight hunger in their communities.
And that is how the idea for Fresh Opportunities was born. I started packaging food at my school and delivering meals with friends. The club kept on growing and more and more students wanted to get involved and help our mission of fighting hunger in NYC.
I started talking with friends in schools across NYC and realized that my school wasn't the only one throwing out perfectly good food. So I began working with students across NYC to start chapters of Fresh Opportunities at their schools. I connected students in high schools with local community fridges to drop food off and provide students with all the packaging supplies they needed for FREE!
You are never too young to start taking action and make a difference at your school or in your community.
