Here in Utah, thousands of students face an invisible barrier every day: school lunch debt. These are kids who show up ready to learn but carry the quiet burden of wondering how they’ll pay for a meal.

As of 2023, Utah students had accumulated over $1.7 million in lunch debt and that number continues to rise with the cost of living. Many families are caught in the middle: they earn too much to qualify for free or reduced lunch, but not enough to consistently afford school meals.

While schools do their best to make sure no child is denied a meal, the unpaid balances don’t disappear. They follow students for years, and in some cases, prevent them from participating in activities or even receiving their diplomas.

This isn’t just a financial issue, it’s a barrier to education, confidence, and well-being.

According to the Utah Food Bank:

“Childhood hunger as a hidden educational barrier has far-reaching consequences on students’ academic performance and overall well-being. Hunger affects cognitive abilities, concentration, memory, and problem-solving skills.”

At Feed the Kids Foundation, we’re working hard to erase this debt—one school, one student, one meal at a time. With the help of generous donors, we’ve already paid off thousands of dollars in local lunch debt, directly impacting hundreds of families.
