In historic downtown Helena, Arkansas, the Gist Music Company stands as a living piece of Delta history and American music culture. Since 1941, its walls have held the sound of generations of musicians, students, and dreamers who discovered that music wasn’t just something you heard…it was something that could change your life. Today, that legacy is at risk.

We are launching The 300 Campaign—an effort to bring together 300 supporters at $333 each to restore, revitalize, revive and preserve the Gist Music Company, ensuring it remains a place of music, opportunity, and community for generations to come.

Our Mission: Restore, Revitalize and Revive The Gist.

This is not about replacing history. It’s about protecting it — and activating it for the future. Once restored and revitalized, the Gist Music Company will include:

A working music store and record shop (honoring its roots)
A live performance space for artists, guest speakers and community events
A recording and rehearsal studio
A workforce training hub for introduction to sound engineering, stagehand 101, and production professional opportunities. This will be a base for music education, job creation, and cultural preservation in the Arkansas Delta.

Why This Matters (Now More Than Ever)

Across Arkansas and beyond, live music faces a hidden crisis. There is not a shortage of talent. There is a shortage of trained production professionals. We thought something had to change. That’s why we created The Music Education Initiative—to train the next generation of professionals in sound, lighting, and live event production. The Gist becomes a major base for this work. This is historic preservation + workforce development + cultural activation—all in one place.

The Leadership Behind the Vision

This project is led by Orson Weems and Greg “GT” Thompson, brought together through the legacy of Al Bell, who taught that music is a force for economic and social change.

Orson Weems – Arkansas native, former Razorback football player, businessman and leader dedicated to providing opportunity in the Delta.
Greg “GT” Thompson – Former touring artist and founder of The 17th Floor, Music Director experience for artists TLC and Usher.

Through their work with The Music Education Initiative—including the Majesty mobile studio and statewide workshops—they are building a pipeline from passion to profession. The Gist is the next chapter.
