As physicians and the Founders and Executive Directors of Journey Through Medicine, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, our own journey through medicine—as students, residents, and practicing physicians—has given us clear insight into the need for change. Together, with your support, we aim to improve the journey for the next generation of physicians.

We know firsthand the transformative power of uplifting medical students, residents, fellows, and early career physicians during their most challenging moments: it saves lives.

While we have had the opportunity to provide financial relief and mental health support to residents informally over the years, we recognize that this mission is greater than us. We won’t rest until medicine experiences a paradigm shift where all doctors are viewed and treated as humans first.

To do this, we need your support:

We are launching Journey Through Medicine to address the systemic lack of institutionalized support systems in our field, leaving us vulnerable to extreme mental, physical, and often financial stress and further fueling the U.S. physician shortage.

By contributing a tax-deductible donation as a Founding Supporter, you are investing in improved outcomes—not only for those within our profession but also for the countless patients who will benefit from heightened compassionate care from a physician not sacrificing their own well-being.

WHO WE ARE: THE HUMANS BEHIND THE M.D.s

We (Patrick and Nancy) met as pre-med students at Stanford University, bonding over our shared desire to serve others through medicine. From medical school to residency, we pursued careers in Integrated Plastic Surgery and Obstetrics & Gynecology before switching to Anesthesiology and Radiology, respectively.

Every stage of our journey—student, resident, fellow, and practicing physician—ushered in new challenges, from time constraints, financial difficulties to relationship strain and mental health hurdles.

The common factor? Medical training and the practice of medicine can often come at a severe cost to our well-being. To compound this, we are often left to navigate the most challenging and sometimes bleakest periods of our lives without crucial support systems to help mitigate these challenges.

Reaching this stage of our journey has required grit, resilience, grace under pressure, and sometimes being strong enough to be vulnerable. We’ve encountered many helping hands along the way, and we both made a commitment that one day, we would pay it forward.

That day is finally here.

We are honoring that commitment by launching Journey Through Medicine.

THE TREATMENT: CHANGE STARTS WITH US

At Journey Through Medicine, we believe that as doctors, change must start with us. Our mission is to empower physicians and physicians-in-training through mentorship, community, and financial support—along each and every step of their journey. Our target population includes medical students, resident physicians, fellows, practicing physicians, and retiring physicians, who each face distinctive challenges.

As a Founding Supporter, your tax-deductible contribution will fund the following initiatives in 2025:

ADVOCACY

Digital content for current and future doctors, including the upcoming Journey Through Medicine Podcast, tackling infrequently discussed topics such as bullying, contract negotiation, burnout, impostor syndrome, mental health, nontraditional ways of practicing medicine, financial literacy/management, and the culture of medical malpractice ligation.
Reframing societal perceptions of physicians with targeted social media PR campaigns highlighting our humanity and dedication to serve.

SUPPORT

Emergency mini-grants for financial relief, such as childcare vouchers, emergency travel and legal fees.
Mental health resources, including emergency services for suicide prevention and culturally specific care for underrepresented doctors.
Coaching check-ins to support students and physicians on their journeys through medicine—even if they decide (with a clear mind) to pivot.

COMMUNITY

Private online community as a safe space alternative to social media featuring resources, 1:1 peer support calls, monthly meetings with mentors, and affinity groups.
