Black Mountain Schools need your help.

Black Mountain Primary and Elementary School campuses serve children in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Hurricane Helene devastated our community with historic flooding, mudslides, and wind damage. Homes, businesses, roads, and bridges were washed away. Families were out of power for weeks. Students missed over a month of school, and homes, businesses, and schools still do not have potable water, more than seven weeks after the storm.

Our community is healing, but we have a long way to go. All families are affected. We mourn the loss of people and places that make our community special. Daily life is more complicated as we clean up and rebuild.

Each October, we host our annual school fundraiser through a Fun Run and Ninja Course. Because of the storm, we did not have this fundraiser. Many of the local organizations and businesses that so generously support our schools also suffered losses in the storm. Volunteers numbers are dwindling. We are entering a new phase of recovery.

Our community needs your help. Natural disasters of this scale create immense stress on children and families. Building and maintaining a sense of community is essential for mental health, especially during crisis.

Money we raise will help fund:

additional counseling services to help our students and staff heal.
family events to allow community building and meals together.
grants for teachers to enhance their classroom instruction.
enrichment activities to provide students fun, educational activities to help create a sense of normalcy.
mini grants for grade level projects and special events like Battle of the Books.
after school clubs to inspire creativity, curiosity, and recreation.
whole school assemblies and performances to enhance arts, science, culture, and global education.
equipment for recess and recreation.
other essential school needs.

Black Mountain Primary and Black Mountain Elementary are Title One schools, where more than 40% of students receive free and reduced lunch. That was BEFORE devastation struck. Flooding is not covered by typical homeowners insurance, and many families suffered significant losses. After the disruption of COVID, our community is dealing with another disaster and it will take us years to fully recover.
