About Friends of Kingston 501(c)(3)

Kingston Kia Kaha Aiono, son of Sarah and Hagoth, arrived March 21, 2004. He loved aquariums, beaches, music, art, and SpongeBob. In December 2006 a fever would not break. Doctors at Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach traced it to X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome (XLP). This rare inherited immune deficiency strikes boys almost exclusively and turns common viruses deadly. Kingston passed on January 5, 2007. He was two.

His brother Phoenix arrived that September with the same diagnosis. Early detection gave the family time to find a bone marrow match. Their community answered. In 2026 year Phoenix turned 19 and graduated high school.

When Sarah and Hagoth were expecting again, what they had lived through led them to test the baby before birth. The test showed a girl who does not carry the gene. Today, Lylah is a thriving high schooler.

Friends of Kingston was founded in 2008 by Kingston's friends and family. It raises awareness of primary immune deficiencies and supports families through long hospital stays.
