KFAI 50TH ANNIVERSARY BOOK

For nearly 50 years, KFAI has been a place where neighbors become broadcasters, music and culture travel across languages and generations, and voices too often left out of mainstream media have a place on the public airwaves.

As KFAI approaches our 50th anniversary on May 1, 2028, we’re creating a 200-page, full-color commemorative book celebrating the people, programs, music, movements, and communities that have made KFAI what it is.

The book will bring together:

Personal stories from KFAI program hosts, volunteers, staff, listeners, and community members
Historic photographs and artifacts from five decades of Twin Cities community radio
Reflections on the programs, people, and moments that shaped KFAI
Stories of KFAI’s role in the cultural and community life of Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and beyond

Help Us Preserve & Celebrate Our History

KFAI has never been the work of one person or one generation. Thousands of people have built this station together, week after week and year after year.

While we continue to seek grant support for this project, we need help covering the initial production costs of documenting that history and creating a beautiful, lasting record of it. Every contribution helps bring our archives, memories, photographs, and stories together into a book that can be shared for generations.

Why It Matters

Preserving Community History — Five decades of KFAI contain stories that exist nowhere else. This project helps ensure they aren’t lost.

Honoring the People Who Built KFAI — KFAI’s story belongs to the volunteers, listeners, artists, activists, neighbors, and communities who have filled its airwaves since 1978.

Carrying KFAI Forward — Celebrating our past is also an investment in what comes next: independent, community-powered media made by and for the people who call this place home.

KFAI’s history is community history. Help us preserve it.

Thank you for being part of the story.
