The Challenges in Africa

Patient pamphlets are crucial for understanding, managing, and preventing diseases. In Africa, lack of access to health information, compounded by language barriers, leads every year to preventable and treatable diseases and premature deaths:

2.6 million children under the age of five die from diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis.
472,000 school-age children (5 to 14 years old) die from diseases like lower respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and meningitis.
More than 14 million people (aged 15 to 59) die from HIV/AIDS, which is the leading cause of death in Africa.
In addition, over 2.2 million people aged 60 and older die from heart disease, stroke, and respiratory infections.

The solution

MiLHO Inc. increases access to health information by producing visually engaging health pamphlets created in collaboration with local experts. The pamphlets provide clear, concise, culturally sensitive, and practical information accessible on cell phones. The pamphlets are translated into multiple African languages, increasing access to knowledge and self-care and reducing premature deaths.

It all began with a medical emergency.

In my thirty-eighth week of pregnancy, I had a detached placenta, endangering my unborn child. Thanks to care and information, we survived. Concerned about Africa's lack of health information, I realized its chronic need, as exemplified by Peter's tragic passing.

I knew what I had to do after speaking with healthcare professionals and family members.

I noticed a lack of health information in Africa, which inspired me to establish MiLHO Inc. This non-profit organization creates health pamphlets on diseases with illustrations and translations in African languages. In Kenya, over 90% of healthcare professionals had never seen such materials for patient care, showing the urgent need for our initiative.

MiLHO aims to provide essential health information and prevent unnecessary suffering and premature deaths by creating disease awareness, management, and prevention pamphlets translated into as many African languages as possible.

We're changing lives in more ways than one.

By developing these pamphlets with skilled professionals in Africa and distributing them to clinics and hospitals, we also create job opportunities and improve livelihoods.

Each pamphlet costs $1,000 to produce and helps provide jobs and support livelihoods in Africa. The cost breakdown for each pamphlet is as follows.

Initially, our focus will be on Kenya. We aim to print and distribute pamphlets to benefit 10,000 people in Homa Bay County. It costs 26 cents to print and distribute one pamphlet locally in Kenya.*

An additional $7,000 will help to cover the administrative cost of managing our volunteer staff, which will be allocated to the MiLHO fund.

Our initial fundraising goal is $69,100 to cover:

Translation of 10 completed pamphlets, each to Wolof, Zulu, Somali, Oromo, Kinyarwanda, and Shona.
Create and translate pneumonia, HIV/AIDS, and diarrhea pamphlets.
Print and distribute 10,000 pamphlets.
Support MiLHO's administrative fund for pamphlet distribution costs in Africa.
