In 2014, after securing a landmark legal victory against the fossil fuel industry using a long-ignored constitutional provision in the Pennsylvania state constitution, Maya K. van Rossum envisioned the powerful value of securing constitutional environmental rights that reached the highest plain of legal protection in every state across the entire U.S..

And less than 10 years later, as a direct result of our work:

New York secured its Green Amendment,
Green Amendment language has been proposed in 18 states,

- is anticipated in at least 3 more, &
- organizing towards an amendment is advancing in another 3 states.

For the 3 states where Green Amendment protections have been secured – Pennsylvania, Montana and New York – powerful advocacy and litigation progress is underpinning community activism and litigation to:

address the climate crisis;
challenge fracking fossil fuels;
secure clean-up of toxic contamination;
protect communities from devastating levels of air pollution;
protect streams, rivers, and drinking water aquifers from toxic contamination; and
protect precious natural open space.
