Hi, my name is Anaya Miller, and growing up with Sickle Cell Disease has taught me one of the most important lessons of my life: never let an obstacle stop you from becoming who you are meant to be.
Living with sickle cell has not always been easy. There have been moments when I had to take a different approach, slow down, rest, or be patient with my body. Instead of dwelling on what I could not control, I learned how to become stronger, more aware of my health, and more determined to keep moving forward.
One of the biggest challenges I have faced is the physical pain that comes with sickle cell. Pain crises can happen without warning, and there have been times when I missed more than two weeks of school. Returning after being away was stressful because I had to catch up while still taking care of my health. Sometimes that stress even affected my body and led to more hospital visits. Through it all, I learned patience, resilience, and the importance of not giving up.
❤️ Finding Strength Through Community
As I grew older, I also developed a deep sense of empathy for others who face health challenges. I wanted to be around other young people who understood what it was like to live with sickle cell, and that led me to Camp Crescent Moon.
Camp changed my life. Being surrounded by other children with similar experiences helped me feel proud of my journey. Hearing their stories helped me grow out of my comfort zone and reminded me that I was not alone. Camp had such a meaningful impact on me that, now that I am older, I have chosen to volunteer and give back to the same community that helped me.
🎓 What This Scholarship Means to Me
Receiving the Warrior on the Rise Scholarship is an honor because it reminds me that my journey matters. Sickle cell has brought many challenges into my life, but it has also helped shape me into a stronger, more compassionate, and more determined person.
I do not want sickle cell to define me or become an excuse. I choose to use my experiences as motivation to keep going, work harder, and build the life I want.
