Hi, my name is Anthony Green, and I live with sickle cell disease — specifically the severe SS form. Because of that, life is not always easy, and I often have to think about my health in ways that many teenagers do not.
Simple things that others may take for granted, like jumping into a pool, sitting in a cold room, or being around too much air conditioning, can become serious concerns for me. Cold temperatures can trigger pain or complications, so I have to stay aware of my surroundings and make adjustments to protect my health.
There are also times when I cannot do everything physically that others can do. I may not always be able to keep up, and that can be frustrating. Watching others participate freely while I have to hold back can make me feel different or even isolated at times. Sickle cell disease has taught me that I cannot take my health, my energy, or even my time for granted.
💪 Choosing Responsibility and Resilience
My daily routine is shaped by sickle cell disease. Every morning, I take medication to help manage my condition. It is not optional — it is necessary. It helps my body function and gives me the chance to live as close to a normal teenage life as possible.
While many people wake up and begin their day without thinking much about their health, I begin mine with responsibility, discipline, and awareness. Living with sickle cell has forced me to understand my body, respect my limits, and keep going even when things are difficult.
Even though this disease can feel limiting and unfair, I refuse to let it define my mindset or my future. Sickle cell has made me stronger, more disciplined, and more determined. It has taught me resilience — the ability to keep moving forward even when the road is hard.
🎓 What This Scholarship Means to Me
Receiving the Warrior on the Rise Scholarship is a powerful reminder that my journey matters. It shows me that others believe in my future and recognize the strength it takes to pursue education while living with sickle cell disease.
My life may not look like everyone else’s, but it is still mine to live. I am proud of how far I have come, and I am determined to keep pushing toward my goals. No matter what obstacles I face, I want to prove to myself and others that even with one of the most severe forms of sickle cell disease, I can still stand strong and keep moving ahead.
