Hi, my name is Ayden Buie, and I was born with sickle cell anemia. Living with sickle cell has been one of the hardest challenges of my life, but it has also helped shape who I am and who I hope to become.
Because of sickle cell, I have had to be careful about things that many people do not think twice about. Going swimming, being in cold weather, or even dealing with sudden temperature changes can trigger a pain crisis. These limitations have not always been easy, especially when I wanted to participate in activities like everyone else.
School has also been affected by my health. There have been times when I missed days because of sickle cell, and even times when I had to be sent home after having a pain crisis at school. Falling behind meant I had to work even harder in my classes, but I never stopped trying.
📚 Finding Purpose Through Science
Even while managing my health, I discovered a love for certain subjects — especially math, science, and social studies. These classes came naturally to me, and they became the ones I looked forward to the most.
My experiences with sickle cell also gave me a unique perspective on medicine. Although being hospitalized was difficult, I found myself interested in the equipment, the care process, and the way medical teams worked to help patients. Over time, those experiences helped me realize that I want to be part of that work one day.
Because I know what it feels like to live with sickle cell, I have a strong desire to help others who face similar struggles. That is one of the main reasons I want to pursue hematology and major in biology. I want to use my education and personal experience to care for patients, support families, and make a difference in the lives of people living with blood disorders.
🎓 What This Scholarship Means to Me
Receiving the Warrior on the Rise Scholarship means so much to me because it supports both my education and my dream of becoming a hematologist. It reminds me that my challenges do not have to limit my future — they can help guide my purpose.
Sickle cell may have created obstacles in my life, but it has also given me compassion, focus, and motivation. I am determined to keep moving forward, work hard in college, and one day help patients who understand the same pain and uncertainty that I have experienced.
