Hi, my name is Ayomide Tunji-Akande, and my love is graceful, intense, inspiring, frustrating, and unforgettable.
My love is soccer.
I was introduced to soccer by my father, and I cannot thank him enough because it transformed my life. The first time I watched the beautiful game, I was captivated. The passion, the movement, the emotion, and the beauty of it all pulled me in immediately. The more I watched, the more I fell in love.
Eventually, just watching was not enough. I wanted to understand everything about the game. I spent hours learning, studying, watching matches, and absorbing every piece of knowledge I could find. Soccer became more than a sport to me โ it became something that inspired me, challenged me, and gave me joy.
I even founded a club in its honor.
Like any love, soccer is not always easy. It can lift me to the top of the world one moment and leave me disappointed the next. But no matter how many times the game breaks my heart, I always come back. That is what love does.
๐ Living with Sickle Cell Disease
The difficult part is that I live with sickle cell disease, and it has affected how close I can get to the sport I love.
Sickle cell has placed limits on my body. I cannot always practice as long as others, run as far as others, or play as hard as others. Watching players on the big stage fills me with excitement, but it can also bring a deep feeling of jealousy because I want to be out there too.
I want to chase the ball, compete, and experience the game without limits. But sickle cell has made that dream harder.
Still, sickle cell cannot stop me from loving soccer. It cannot stop me from dreaming. It cannot stop me from believing that one day, I can overcome the limits placed in front of me.
๐ Believing in the Impossible
I still practice. I still dream. I still hold on to the possibility, even if it feels small, that I can do something others may think is impossible.
My love for soccer inspires me far beyond the field. It teaches me to believe in miracles, to keep pushing when the odds are against me, and to chase goals that may seem out of reach. I have seen incredible things happen on a soccer field, so I believe incredible things can happen in my own life too.
Sickle cell disease may change the way I move through the world, but it does not take away my passion, my imagination, or my determination.
