Hi, my name is Charlaye Dennis, and sickle cell disease has shaped my life in ways that go far beyond hospital rooms, lab results, or pain crises.
Living with sickle cell has influenced how I see myself, how I move through the world, and what I believe my purpose is. It has never been just a medical condition. In many ways, it has been a teacher, a motivator, and, at times, an obstacle I have had to learn to climb over again and again.
Growing up, I learned early that my body had limits most children around me did not always understand. While others could run, play, and move without hesitation, I had to learn how to listen to my body. I learned to pay attention to how my chest felt when I pushed too hard, to recognize quiet warning signs, and to understand the importance of staying hydrated, warm, rested, and honest with myself.
That kind of awareness did not always feel fair, but it built discipline in me. It made me responsible before I even fully understood what responsibility meant.
💪 Learning Strength Through the Pauses
The pain episodes have been some of the hardest parts of my journey — not just physically, but emotionally. It is one thing to hurt. It is another thing to watch life continue around you while you are forced to pause.
There were times when I missed classes, events, and plans with friends. I learned what it feels like to want to show up but not be able to. Those moments taught me empathy. They made me softer toward other people because I understand that you never truly know what silent battles someone may be fighting.
Even when sickle cell interrupted my plans, it never took away my desire to keep going.
🩺 Turning Experience Into Purpose
Sickle cell disease has also opened doors to purpose. It has guided my interest in healthcare, hematology, and public health. It has made me curious about the body, treatment, advocacy, and the power of representation.
I do not only want to survive this condition. I want to help change the way others experience it.
I want to be a voice in rooms where decisions are made. I want to stand beside younger children living with sickle cell so they never feel like they are carrying it alone. I want to help build a future where care is more compassionate, research is more accessible, and no one feels defined by their diagnosis.
🎓 What This Scholarship Means to Me
Receiving the Warrior on the Rise Scholarship is a powerful reminder that my story matters and that my future is worth investing in.
Sickle cell disease has taken things from me, but it has also given me strength, resilience, compassion, and a reason to dream bigger. This scholarship supports my education and helps me continue pursuing the purpose that has grown from my journey.
Sickle cell has challenged me, but it has not defeated me. It has shaped me, but it has not limited who I can become. It is part of my story, but it is not the ending.
